What’s New in ABBYY FineReader 10
With its enhanced, highly intelligent OCR technologies, ABBYY FineReader 10 dramatically expands the scope of traditional text recognition. Based on the new generation of ADRT® (Adaptive Document Recognition Technology), FineReader 10 reproduces even the most complex formatting of multipage documents with extreme precision and intelligence. A range of functions designed to increase productivity, combined with a smart, easy-to-use interface, make ABBYY FineReader 10 the essential tool for professional work with documents.
New Achievements in OCR Accuracy and Performance
ABBYY FineReader 10 demonstrates significant accuracy increase in processing documents with background image items (e.g. magazine pages); high-quality images; documents with difficult-to-read print quality (e.g. faxes); and images captured by digital and phone cameras. In the table below, you can find additional data on accuracy and performance enhancements for certain document types and conversion tasks*:
OCR Accuracy/Conversion Speed
Increase*
OCR accuracy for Asian languages (e.g. Japanese and Chinese) Up to 30%
OCR accuracy for European languages (e.g. English, German, French) Up to 20%
OCR accuracy for digital camera images Up to 30%
Faster export to PDF (with MRC compression) Up to 50%
* Numbers quoted are based on internal ABBYY testing.
Conversion of Complex Documents with ABBYY ADRT®
Based on the second generation of ABBYY’s unique ADRT®*, FineReader 10 delivers further innovative enhancements in reproducing the structure and formatting of complex multipage documents. ABBYY ADRT not just preserves the exact look of the original structure but intelligently reproduces the logical links between formatting attributes and content of the document across all its pages.
FineReader accurately re-creates all the most complex formatting attributes in native Microsoft® Office format — such as table of contents, hierarchical heading structures, page numbering, headers and footers, footnotes, styles, and captions to images — while preserving consistent text flow throughout all pages. As a result, you get an output Microsoft Office document that is ready to use and easy to adapt for your purposes. For example, you can quickly change or remove the header across all pages simultaneously or add a new chapter to the document which will be added to the existing table of contents.
*Adaptive Document Recognition Technology (ADRT) is an essential part of ABBYY’s OCR technology. It is responsible for re-creation of logical structure and formatting elements in multipage documents. ADRT analyses and processes a multipage document as a single entity rather than a batch of separate pages (method used by earlier generations of OCR) and makes converting paper documents, images and PDF files to the Microsoft Office format simpler and more accurate than ever.
3rd Generation Camera OCR — Now Reads Phone Camera Photos!
New FineReader 10 incorporates the next generation of ABBYY’s intelligent Camera OCR technology. The enhanced technology allows you to achieve quality conversion results not only on photos captured by standard digital cameras but also mobile phone cameras. To ensure the best possible OCR accuracy on photographed images, ABBYY FineReader 10 automatically adjusts digital photos before recognition and provides a range of new image pre-processing functions and options:
Automatic correction of 3D perspective distortions ISO noise correction Blurred image correction Trapezium crop toolSee requirements for cameras.
New User Interface — Maximum Efficiency for Minimum Effort!
With its expertly designed user interface, ABBYY FineReader 10 gives you a thorough view of its functions and options from the very start and guides you directly to the result. All the key document conversion tasks have been carefully singled out and grouped according to the output format into the extended Quick Tasks menu to reduce amount of steps usually required to process a document. As a result, all you need to do to have your document converted is just to select the required task and press the button.
Enhanced Export to HTML — Specifically for E-book Readers
Taking into account the growing popularity of electronic books, ABBYY FineReader now includes enhanced and extended capability to convert documents into HTML format. For example, it can automatically save chapters of a large book as individual HTML files and create separately a table of contents for it with internal links to the respective chapters and files. As a result, you can easily navigate between the chapters without the need to scroll through a very long HTML file. FineReader 10 also supports export of documents to flexible HTML layout which can be easily edited, indexed for search, or readily published on a Web site.
Powerful PDF Compression
The new version offers powerful capability to optimize the size of output PDF documents for efficient archiving and sharing. By leveraging ABBYY’s new MRC technology, you can reduce the size of an output PDF up to 10 times, while keeping its high visual quality, and preserve valuable storage space.
Further Improvements in Page Layout Analysis and Retention
New ABBYY FineReader delivers enhanced capability of analyzing document page layout, with major improvements focused on documents containing multiple image items, images with text upon them, charts and graphs — such as magazine pages, brochures, reports and more. For example, ABBYY FineReader 10 automatically detects text placed upon an image, intelligently identifies image and text areas and accurately re-creates these items preserving the document’s original look. As a truly professional application, ABBYY FineReader gives you many options in transforming your documents, including the possibility to change the results of page analysis manually.
