Design and Build
One of the defining features of the Motorola BACKFLIP is its distinctive reverse-flip design, which set it apart from its contemporaries. When closed, the phone measures 108 x 53 x 15.3 mm and weighs 133 grams, making it fairly compact and lightweight for its time. The standout design element is the QWERTY keyboard that sits idle on the back of the device until flipped open, showcasing Motorola’s willingness to experiment. This backflip mechanism paved the way for new interaction methods with its BACKTRACK touch panel—a small touchpad on the back for easy navigation without obscuring the screen.
