Given its time of release, the NEC N820 supported basic messaging formats such as SMS, EMS, and MMS, while internet browsing was possible via a WAP 1.2.1 browser. The presence of Java offered some level of extendable functionality through applications and games, with Field Golf 3D pre-installed. Additional features included a photo editor, which was a fun addition for enhancing pictures taken with the camera.
